What is a Lens?

What is a lens? This article, prepared to answer the question, serves as a guide. We will also examine what LED fixtures do. In lighting design, factors such as light direction, distance the light can travel, light angle, intensity, and density are very important. Because these directly affect visual comfort and energy efficiency. One of the most sensitive optical components that determines the light angle and therefore the distance it can travel is the lens. Lenses focus the light emitted from the light source in the desired direction.

What is a lens? What is its purpose in lighting?

Essentially, a lens controls and focuses the light it receives from a lighting fixture. Preventing light dispersion, the lens is made of an optical material such as glass, silicon, or clear plastic. Lenses, which operate with much greater precision than reflectors, also prevent glare because they are positioned in front of the light source.

For example, the light angle of a fixture that emits light at 120 degrees can be changed. To do this, we place special lenses in front of the LED chips. Models known as lens wallwashers on the market can illuminate walls up to 25 meters away, depending on the lens's properties. This is entirely a matter of focusing and directing the light beam.

Depending on the project or budget, you can choose a reflector instead of a lens when adjusting the light angle. For example, reflectors are perfectly sufficient for interior spaces. However, for exterior lighting projects, you should use luminaires with lenses.
